Game Summary for Padres VS Mets
Sunday July 20th. 2008 at Napa Valley College
This
week's game featured a chance for the 3rd place Pads to build on
their lead in the standings, facing the 3-10 35+ Mets. Things started
out okay for the Pads, after starting pitcher Jason
"JMash" Masciorini walked the first two batters and
gave up a hit to start the game, he induced Dan Williams to hit
into a double play. The next hitter, Wayne Padd, hit a shot into
the 5.5 hole, which Justin "JustMash"
Masciorini gloved with an amazing backhanded dive. However,
when JustMash attempted to get up and
throw the speedy Padd out, it became very apparent that something
was terribly wrong. It was pretty obvious at the outset that he
had injured his shoulder on the play, as he was helped off the field
by the trainer. Scoring on the play was Don Lowery, as Padd was
credited with his first career REBL hit and RBI on the play. Defensively
this created some problems for the Friars, as their normal starting
shortstop, Hal Norman, was rumored to be
somewhere in Alaska drowning his sorrows in a whiskey bottle. So,
With JMash the only remaining shortstop
available, Mike Baldwin had to come in
and pitch. After walking a couple and allowing third run of the
inning to score on a base hit, Baldwin
settled down and got out of the jam.
The Friars were pretty shaken by the turn
of events, after all, they had expected to come into this game and
roll of the downtrodden Mets. After Justin
Masciorini was taken to the hospital with what turned out to
be a dislocated shoulder, Pad's manager Jason
Masciorini gave a inspired speech in the dugout, urging the
troops to "win one for the JustMasher!!" Not surprisingly,
as JMash is known for his aspirations to be a motivational speaker,
it worked, as the Pads put together a big inning, battin around,
scoring five, with the big hit, a double, coming from Kevin
"K2" Kennedy driving in the go ahead runs. After this,
the floodgates opened, as the Padres would score another seven over
the next five innings. Meanwhile, Mike Baldwin
was magnificent, allowing only four more base runners to reach over
the next scoreless six innings, while inducing two double play balls,
before K2 would come in to close it out
for the final, also scoreless, two innings, the final score, Pads
12, Mets 3
Game Summary for Padres VS Twins
Sunday July 27th. 2008 at Golis Park
In the 11th week of the season, the Pads
the second place Twins, who the Pads had narrowly defeated in the
2nd game of the year in a wild one, 14-13
in the bottom of the ninth. Here the Pads were looking for a
barometer test, to see how they stacked up against one of the better
teams in the league. In the top of the first, things started out
positively for the Friars, as they scratched out a run. JMash
singled, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball, and then
Bruno singled him in to give the Pads the
early lead. Mike Baldwin got the start
for the Padres after impressively shutting
down the Mets in fine fashion in week 10. In the bottom of the
first, Baldwin got off to a rough start
however, giving up a run on a walk, an error and a single to left
before settling down nicely and cruising in and out of rough seas
without giving up another run until the eighth, more on that later.
From Twins starter Steve Nojima,
it was more of the same as he was extremely adept at getting out
of jams as well, until the 7th that is. Bob Harrington
led off with a single and promptly stole second. After Mike
Baldwin lined out to short, Harrington
took advantage of a napping Nojima and stole third. This brought
Jason "JMash" Masciorini to
the plate, who promptly laid down a perfect bunt with Harrington
crashing down the line, beating the throw and scoring the go ahead
run. The score would remain the same until the aforementioned bottom
of the eighth.
It began with two quick outs, and it appeared
that the Pads would keep their lead until at least the ninth. However,
after Twin Keith Lederer walked and stole second, Baldwin
induced what looked like a pop out to short right field. Unfortunately,
it found an empty patch of grass and fell for a base hit, scoring
the tying run. After the Pads weren't able to take back the lead
in the top of the ninth, despite a leadoff single, again by Bob
Harrington, the Twins came up in the bottom of the ninth. Coming
in to relieve Baldwin, was Pads closer
Jason Gilbert. After getting the first
out, Gilbert ran into some trouble, giving
up a walk and a single, putting runners at first and second.. This
brought Twin Emmet Caven to the plate, who struck a weakly hit ground
ball to Pads second baseman Joe Wilson. It
was a tough play and Wilson had to hurry
in order to get the out at first. Unfortunately the throw was in
the dirt and skipped by Pads first sacker Mike
Ford, allowing the winning run to score from second, giving
the Twins the victory 3-2.
Game Summary for Padres VS Bluejays
Sunday August 3rd. 2008 at Montgomery High School
A
week after a tough loss to the
Twins, the Pads looked to rebound against a struggling 5-8-1
Blue Jays team. Things got off to a good start in the bottom of
the first as the Friars scored two quick runs and still had the
bases loaded with no outs. Unfortunately that would be all, as Jays
starter Mike Abbadessa would strike out the side to end the threat.
In the second, the run production would continue, as Mike
Baldwin led off the inning with a base hit, moved to second
on Andy "Wags" Wagoner's bunt
and scored on JMash's single to right
center. So, after two innings, the Pads were up 3-0 and things were
looking good. Unfortunately, things would take an abrupt turn for
the worst in the top of the third, as the Jays scored three, getting
the offense kick started with a couple successful bunts into a swampy
area half way down the third base line. This wasn't even the worst
of it, while fielding one of the bunts, starting pitcher Kevin
"K2" Kennedy severely sprained his thumb as he slipped
and fell awkwardly into "the Montgomery swamp", which
seems to mysteriously move around the infield from game to game.
The loss of their All-star pitcher seemed to deal a psychological
blow to the Friar ballclub. All of a sudden the Pad's bats fell
silent as they failed to score over the next five innings. Meanwhile
the Jays came alive, scoring at least a run in all of the remaining
7 innings. The Padres managed to mount a threat in the eighth, scoring
two and cutting the lead to five, however, they couldn't maintain
the score differential, as they allowed two more in the
top of the ninth and ended up on the losing end, 12-5.
